The history of lead-acid batteries can be traced back to the middle of the 19th century, and its development can be roughly divided into the following stages:

1, early R & D stage (1859-1881): In 1859, the French scientist Gravier (Gaston Planté) invented the lead-acid battery, which is the first rechargeable battery. It used lead plates as the positive and negative stages, separated by rubber, and sulfuric acid as the electrolyte, successfully realizing the interconversion between electrical energy and chemical energy. However, the initial version of the lead-acid battery had a very low specific energy due to the use of lead plates as electrodes.
2, technical improvement stage (1881 - 1950s): In 1881, the British physicist Ford (Camille Fauré) used the paste lead oxide technology, Pb3O4, distilled water and sulfuric acid made of lead paste coated on the surface of the lead plate, which substantially improved the specific energy of lead-acid batteries. In addition, the British Sellon (Sellon) invented a lead-antimony alloy plate grid, this grid and Fur powder coating method combined, the so-called paste-coated pole plate, this production method is simple and feasible, greatly facilitating the production.
3, space exploration to promote the stage (1950s -70s): the 1950s, the United States Bell Labs began to study the application of lead-acid batteries in space exploration, which promoted the technical progress of lead-acid batteries. By the 1970s, Japan, Germany and other countries began to invest heavily in the research and development of lead-acid batteries, and made a series of technological breakthroughs.
4, environmental protection and renewable energy application stage (21st century to the present): with the world's attention to environmental protection and renewable energy, lead-acid batteries are more and more widely used in solar energy, wind energy and other fields. At the same time, the lead-acid battery electrode materials, electrolyte and other aspects of technical progress, such as enhanced lead-acid batteries, gel electrolyte lead-acid batteries, identification batteries and other new types of lead-acid batteries continue to be developed.

    During the research and development of lead-acid batteries, newer test methods and instruments have been gradually introduced to study lead-acid batteries, such as SEM, TEM and DTA. During the 20 years from 1950 to 1970, the research on the basic theory of lead-acid batteries has made a significant leap, and its research focus has been shifted from thermodynamics to electrode process kinetics. In addition, developed countries have also invested a lot of manpower and material resources to develop sealed and maintenance-free lead-acid batteries, using low antimony and antimony-free Pb-Ca alloy to make the plate grid, in order to reduce water loss and self-discharge in the battery, so as to make lead-acid batteries in the process of use to achieve the requirements of low-maintenance and maintenance-free.
